After the death of Gerard, his son Rumold composed and engraved two missing maps for the publication of the Atlas of Mercator in 1595: World and Europe. Yodokus Hondius, publishing the atlas of Mercator-Hondaius, included there all purchased engraved boards with Mercator maps, and also added his own Nova Europae Descriptio card (Description of New Europe), which he himself composed, engraved and signed with his own name. Thus, in the Atlas of Mercator-Hondius two maps of Europe coexisted. At the same time, the map of Europe by Rumold Mercator, although it was compiled earlier, reproduces a number of geographical objects much more correctly than the map of Hondius. Probably, Hondius used the materials of early English expeditions and considered them correct, although at the time of the publication of the map these materials were already refuted by other cartographers. “Description of New Europe” is an unusually beautiful geographical map that emphasizes the borders of Russia and Europe, as well as European states. Studying the map, we learn about the existence of the German Ocean, and about the mysterious island of Brazil. Acquaintance with the presented map delights researchers from all over the world. The Hyperborean Ocean, indicated on the map, separates Europe from the Arctic, where the habitat of the blessed people living in the legendary "northern" country of Hyperborea is located. The Western European names of geographical objects located on the territory of Russia are very noteworthy: Pont Evkin - Black Sea Meotida swamp - Sea of Azov Tanais River - Don River Granvikum Bay - White Sea) Hyperborean Sea - Barents Sea Hondius used red and greenish colors to indicate the borders of the states, apparently those that were at his fingertips at that moment. On the map you can clearly see the lands formed while independent states, and their composition and geographical location differs little from the modern map of Europe. The map clearly shows that the southwestern border of Russia, separating it from Lithuania (the Grand Duchy of Lithuania), passes along the Dnieper River, in particular through the city of Kiev. That is, the entire territory under the Dnieper was “at the edge” of the empire, which gave it the name “Ukraine”. But the very name of the map is suggestive - NEW Europe. Why did Europe suddenly become new at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, when it was composed by Hondius. At this time, turbulent and tragic events took place in Russia. This is the time of turmoil and the change of the royal dynasty. The borders of Russia have also changed, as evidenced by this map.
